2.5.4 Accelerated Life Testing

Accelerated Life Testing (ALT), just as its name implies, exposes units to extreme conditions, such as high temperature, pressure, humidity, voltage, or mechanical load, to shorten the failure time. Because of its short testing period and low cost, ALT is the first choice for products designed to last decades.

ALT collects both right-censored and arbitrary censored data, fits with a life-stress model (e.g., Arrhenius-Weibull), and extrapolates survival probabilities to normal-use conditions. These predictions can be used as a reference to warranty and design decisions, without waiting for real-time tests. Besides, activation energy and acceleration factors can also be derived from the same model.

Origin’s ALT is integrated into the Reliability and Survival app.
