9.2.2 The (Plot Details) Size Tab

The Size tab appears at the Layer level in the Plot Details dialog box.

Layer Area, Units and other controls

To precisely position or resize the layer, type values in the Left, Top, Width, and Height text boxes. The Left text box value determines the position of the frame relative to the left side of the page. The Top text box value determines the position of the frame relative to the top of the page. The Height and Width text box values determine the size of the frame. These values are in units determined by the Units drop-down list.

The Units drop-down list offers both absolute and relative units.

inch, cm, mm, pixel, point

Absolute Units for Left, Top, Width, and Height.

 % of Page

This option is useful for maintaining the same layer size relative to the page size. When this unit is selected, the Left, Top, Height, and Width text box values are in percentage of the graph page height and width.

Also, see Rotate (deg.)

 % of Linked Layer

This option is available if a layer is a linked child of another layer. This allows you to specify the layer area in percent of the parent layer. When you resize or move the parent layer, the child layer will follow.

Note:

  • When the unit selection is changed in the drop-down list, Left, Top, Height, and Width text box values are automatically updated so that the layer retains the same size and position.
  • When you set the size of the layer, you are also setting the size of the axes in the layer. To set the layer (and thus the axes) to a specific width and height, select the units (For example, inch, cm, or mm) from the Units drop-down list in the Layer Area group, then enter the dimensions in the Width and Height text boxes.

Link Axis Length to Scale with X:Y Ratio(Isometric)

The Link Axis Length to Scale with X:Y Ratio check box is only available for 2D graphs with Cartesian coordinates and for contour plots from matrices. It is used to set the length ratio of X and Y axes (the Width and Height of the layer frame) to maintain the aspect ratio of the actual X and Y scales when the layer size is changed. Once this check box is checked, you can enter the ratio value in the edit box.

Note that when there is an axis break on one of the axes, this check box will be hidden.

If you check this check box and set the ratio, when you use the Scale In button Button Zoom In Tool.png to zoom in a graph area, the rectangle you drawn to select the area will be forced to have same aspect by default. You can use the system variable @DKR to release this restriction.

For 3D graphs, controls for linking axis length to scale are on the Axis tab of the Plot Details dialog box.

When dragged to reposition, also reposition parent layer

The When dragged to reposition, also reposition parent layer check box is only available when the Units drop-down list is set to % of Linked Layer for a linked child layer. When this box is checked, moving and resizing the linked child layer will cause the parent layer and its other child layers to follow.

Layer Area Control Specific for Linked Layer of Piper Diagram

For the linked layers of Piper Diagram, the Layer Area section in this tab is reorganized. The following screenshot shows the dialog design for Layer 2 of the piper diagram. The Layer 3 dialog looks similar but the Left text box is disabled.

On the Size/Speed tab for Layer 2, the value in the Left text box controls the gap between each layer. The value can be any double value, and it corresponds to the percentage of the length between the top vertex of Layer 1 and that of Layer 2 with respect to the side length of rhomb. (see the preview graph in the dialog box).

Scale Elements Group

This group determines how the axes, axes labels, legend, data plots, and other objects that are attached to the Layer Frame or Layer and Scales are affected when the layer is resized. These elements can include text font size, line width of lines and arrows, dimensions of arrow heads and tails and line width of drawn objects such as Rectangles, Polylines, etc. However, the dimensions of drawn objects will always scale when the layer is resized, if such objects are attached to the Layer Frame or Layer and Scales.

Scale With Layer Frame

Scale the layer elements proportionally with the layer.

Fixed Factor

The number in the box determines the size of the layer elements relative to their original size. The size of these elements is determined by multiplying their original size by the scale factor.

Note :

  1. When Scale With Layer Frame is checked and a layer is resized, Origin adjusts the Fixed Factor value. This value provides an indication of the change in object size if the layer is resized while the aspect ratio is maintained. (To keep the aspect ratio while resizing the layer, hold the CTRL key down and then resize the layer.)
  2. To fix the scale factors for all layers, select menu Graph: Fix Scale Factors.
