Summary
Origin’s Design of Experiments app allows users to design experiments, fit models to collected data, and identify the best factor settings to optimize responses.
In this example, we explore a 2K experiment with a single replicate. These designs are commonly used when experiments are costly, time-consuming, or when the number of factors (K) is large.
A company is introducing a new line of waterproof paint and are interested in identifying factors that influence drying time. They selected three potential factors: temperature, humidity, and a paint additive. The company is interested in performing a screening experiment to identify the factors that significantly affect the drying time.

Steps
Create Factorial Design
- Select and click on the Design of Experiments app on in the Stats in the Apps Gallery
- Click on Create Design and select Factorial Design in the pop-up list.
- In the Factorial Design dialog, select 2-Level Factorial as Factorial Type.
And then enter 3 factors (Temperature, Humidity and Additive) in the table under the Factors tab as following image:
- Go to Setting tab. Select Full Factorial design with one Block and one Replicate. Here, the number of Total Runs is 8.
- Go to Miscellaneous tab and turn off the Randomize Design option. (The option to Randomize the Design should be used for a real-life example but for the purpose of this tutorial.)
- Go to Output tab and turn off the Alias Table option.
- Go to Dialog Theme tab. Click Save button and save these settings as an XML file named 2level.
If you would like to reuse these settings, you can click on Load button and open the saved file or click on <Last Used>.
- Click OK to generate the Design Summary, Coded Design and Design Table worksheets.
Analyze Design
- In column H of Design Table worksheet, enter the measured Drying Time dataset.
- Select and click on the Design of Experiments app again, and then click on Analyze Design.
- In the Model tab, select Drying Time under Response drop-down list. Click the + button for Model Terms to confirm the Select Terms up to Order =1.
- Go to Quantities tab, and select Coefficients Type as Uncoded.
- Go to Plots tab, add the Fitted Plot option to Plots list. Click OK.
- In the result sheet DOEAnalysis, you can find All factors (Temperature, Humidity and Additive) show significance.
Optimize Response
- To optimize the response, click on Optimize Response of this app. Click on View Model to display the model terms.
- Set Goal Minimize for Drying Time. Click on Set Lower/Upper Limits to generate system values. Then click OK.
- In the DOEOptimization result sheet, the Solution table displays the combination of values for Temperature, Humidity, and Additive where Drying Time is minimized. The Prediction table shows the fitted values for Drying Time at these values.
Double click on the Optimization Plot to open the interactive window. Move the red lines over the range of values for temperature, humidity, and additive to obtain different Desirability scores.
