Tutorial for Single Exp Smoothing

Summary

This Single Exp Smoothing tool is supported in the Time Series Analysis App. It is used to smooth the time series without obvious trend and seasonality.

Tutorial

This tutorial uses App's built-in sample project. To open this sample OPJU file:

  1. Right click the Time Series Analysis App icon Time Series Analysis icon.png in the Apps Gallery and choose Show Samples Folder.
  2. A folder will open. Drag-and-drop the project file TSA Sample.opju into Origin.

Single Exponential Smoothing

  1. Expand Project Explorer docked on the left. Select folder Smooth and go to workbook "Annual flow of the river Nile at Aswan, 1871-1970".

  2. Highlight Column A and B, and then click the Time Series Analysis App icon Time Series Analysis icon.png in the Apps Gallery.
  3. In the Time Series Analysis window, select Smooth tab and then click Single Exp Smoothing button.

  4. A dialog will open as below.

  5. Uncheck Auto check box after Smoothing Constant and enter 0.5 in the box; Set Number of Points to Initialize and Number of Forecasts to 4 and 3; Keep default settings for other controls.
    Note: Smoothing Constant is a weight usually between 0 and 1. Lower of this value makes less weight to recent data and output a smoother line. Higher of this value makes more weight to recent data and output a less smoother line.

  6. Click OK button to perfrom the smoothing. You will get the results below:
