This tutorial will demonstrate how to create a 4-Y plot and add recession bars.

Steps

  1. Create a new workbook, select Help: Open Folder: Sample Folder... to open the "Samples" folder. In this folder, open the Graphing subfolder and find the file multi_axis_plot.txt. Drag-and-drop this file into the empty worksheet to import it.
  2. Place the mouse cursor near the top left corner of the worksheet. When the cursor changes to a down-right arrow, left-click to select the whole worksheet.

  3. Right-click and select Set as: XY XY from the short-cut menu to set proper plotting designations for the worksheet columns.

  4. Highlight columns A through H. From the main menu, select Plot > Multi-Panel/Axis : 4Ys YY-YY to create a plot as shown below:

  5. Double-click on the X axis to open the X Axis - Layer 1 dialog box. Click the Reference Lines tab, then click the browse button to the right of the Reference Lines at Value box. The dialog rolls up, allowing you to select the col(I) of the worksheet. Click Done to return to the Reference Lines tab.
  6. Check the Alternate Fill box, then check the box in the header of the Line column twice to clear all check marks from the column. Click OK to close the dialog and add a series of shaded regions representing Recession Periods, to the graph.

  7. Double-click again on the bottom X axis to open the Axis dialog for Layer 1. On the Scale tab, change the dialog options as shown below and Apply.

  8. Go to Tick Labels tab, change the dialog options as shown below and Apply.

  9. Go to Line and Ticks tab, click the Top icon on the left panel and check Show Line and Ticks. Then choose In for Style under Major Ticks and None for Style for Minor Ticks and click OK to apply settings and close the dialog box.

  10. Right-click on the legend object and choose Properties. Click the Add Legend Symbol button to the right, choose a filled-square for the Shape, for Symbol Color choose LT Gray, and for Size choose 30. Click Add and Close. A new symbol is added to the legend preview box.
  11. Click into the line of code that was just added to the top box, scroll to the end and type Recession Period. Click okay to close the dialog box.
  12. Resize and reposition the legend as needed, and right-click on each curve to choose the context menu Change Plot to: Line to change the line+symbol curves to line curves. Finally, you will get the graph as below.
