New Article in ChemTech on Origin and Nuclear Magnetic
Resonance Research

The ability to push a button and instantly perform otherwise tedious data analysis tasks has streamlined the study of electrolytic materials used in batteries. One of the most crucial parts in the study and development of polymer and amorphous ionic electrolytes is a detailed understanding of the free ions' motion within the substance. Nuclear magnetic resonance provides an excellent tool to address this issue because it can selectively measure the behavior of a single atomic species among a veritable zoo of ions and molecules. Northwestern University researchers have developed a series of macro program that provide significant time savings by quickly calculating spin lattice relaxation times that are crucial to evaluating new electrolytic materials. Researchers were able to develop a series of LabTalk scripts working with Origin that largely automate the process of calculating spin lattice relaxation times, which in the past was a tedious manual process. Separate scripts were developed for each of the major stages of the analysis process: display buffer, baseline, clear channels and FFT. The treatment, one by one or in batch format, of each of the system's responses was made literally to be "push-button" type, with the help of Origins graphical interface and scripting ability. To find out more, please find the full article in the November issue of ChemTech.
